The Clovehitch Killer

I am a true crime buff. Hollywood doesn’t appear to shy away from these horrifying incidents. Sometimes they put out films that come of like low class money grabs. I don’t want to be critical of people and their effort. It just feels that there is no interest to present the events in a manner that is respectful. That is why I can say that the film “The Clovehitch Killer” is not one of those types of movies.

The Clovehitch Killer is a suspense driven story loosely based on the murders committed by Dennis Rader also known as BTK. The story is what would happen if you discovered that your God-fearing and personal hero father was actually a psychosexual murder? How would that discovery impact you and what are your responsibilities to stop him. This is the movie. This movie handles these subjects with grace that is acceptable since we know that Denis Rader actually tortured and killed a lot of people.

This film is so suspenseful and went in directions I never expected. I was impressed with how they took a story we all are familiar only to create something that felt new. The strength of the film is the use of a story and not the normal reliance on jump scares and gore to claim stake in the oversaturated world of horror movies. The film’s focus on the town and the people but not the serial killer proved to be a successful direction to take. Dylan McDermott was amazing. I know people clamor to defend the acting of Toni Collette in Hereditary. And it was impressive as hell. But Dylan’s transformation to a God-loving sexual sadist was alarming and incredible. You knew the danger that was underneath his facade was just beyond your view. That is how it really was. It was there in plain view for people to view or be viewed by. Just a great film. #checkthismovieout

  1. Finally finished this movie! Hm, if I had to rate it, I’d maybe give it a 6.5 or 7 out of 10. It was pretty slow and honestly it took me so long to finish it because of that. The inspiration from BTK was a little heavy handed for me, I kind of which they had made the killer’s story a bit more unique, but I guess that’s my only major complaint. Once I finally made it to the end, I liked it. I thought that the last 20 minutes of the film made it worth watching, especially while it’s still on YouTube.

    1. I would give this movie a 8/10 stars. I thought it was a well portrayed movie and my only two complaints is that it was slow sometimes and I wasn’t a big fan of the ending. I was kinda surprised the son wasn’t trying his hardest to make his dad commit to his crimes. Due to the fact the whole town thought the son was a sex maniac. 🙃

      1. Ha yeah, I definitely felt bad that the kid probably will always been seen as a freak even though he didn’t do anything. I guess I feel like it’s supposed to show how conflicted it would be to find out your dad is a monster, when you look up to him and all that. It was also probably in his mind easier on his mom and just the community in general for people to remember him in a good light. Maybe sometimes it is better to keep secrets?

        1. I feel like what the son did was unfair to the victim’s families tho. I mean like if my daughter got butt raped I would want to who did it so I can get some justice, or at least vandalize their grave.

  2. I don’t get why the inspired by the btk murders felt heavy handed. The second season of Mind-hunter is doing the same thing. Glad you enjoyed it as you watched more of it. I really am shocked that you didn’t like it. I know you like those slow burn films. The recreation of BTK crimes and motivations were so creepy.

    1. I feel like the main difference between this and Mindhunter is that Mindhunter /is/ actually trying to portray BTK, not just inspired by him. But yeah, it wasn’t too bad, just feel like it would have been more interesting if it was slightly different in that way. Also there’s a difference between a slow burn and just slow 🙂

      1. I think the movie was better than seeing the actual story be retold. That is why it is hard for me to give Mind-Hunter anytime. I felt Clovehitch use of the murders to tell a new story was really cool. We had no clue what the ending was going to be. I really like how they made the story about grappling with the notion of what do you do if you believe you father is a killer. But it is cool. You liked it. Just not as much as I did.
