Bloody fun. That is the best way to describe one of my favorite Norwegian film franchise. Don’t hate me for saying this. But The Dead Snow franchise is the closest thing to the Evil Dead franchise to me. I enjoy these two films more than the first two Evil Dead films. But that also has to do with the fact that I didn’t think Evil Dead was all that. I love Evil Dead 2 though. That film is one of the best horror comedies ever made. However, the Dead Snow franchise is the perfect combination of humor and horror. Gory and funny are how I describe these movies. It just feels right.
In the first film, you have your group of young friends who go to a remote and isolated spot in the woods. There they are introduced to an old legend about when the Nazis came into town from a strange old guy. He tells the kids about a story of how the villagers overthrew the Nazis and kill them all. However, he failed to mention that the dead zombified Nazis would come back and try to reclaim their stolen gold.
The movie is a fun throwback to the silliness of Dead Alive and Evil Dead. There is a great deal of blood flowing in this film. Very good stuff if you ask me. If I remember correctly there is a badly dubbed version that was released for home viewers. It also can be viewed with subtitles. I don’t know which version is better. I don’t mind subtitles. So I would suggest that version. But you do you. Just watch this movie and the sequel. You shouldn’t be disappointed.
